Our First Geocache

Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online. The fun is in the find. You go to the website, (create a free account if you haven’t already) enter the coordinates to your GPS, find the cache, write in the logbook, take something, leave something and hide the cache again, exactly as you found it. When you get home, don’t forget to record your find (or did not find) on the website.
Also, for you Mommies and Daddies, there is an article HERE which states kids like Geocaching and it can help you get them out from in front of the TV, computer or video game and outdoors.

Below is a video entitled Geocaching in Two Minutes. Watch it and you’ll save me a whole lotta typing.Last week, I walked back into the woods behind our house. I found a hollow round rock like half a walnut shell the size of a basketball. Perfect for hiding something under. It screamed GEOCACHE ROCK! to me.
So The Wife and I got our GPS out and hid our first geocache (under the cool rock we found) near our house. We marked the precise coordinates from the GPS and put it on the Geocache website.
(You don’t have to hide a geocache to go find them, just FYI, I’ve been finding them for years and this is the first I’ve hidden).

HERE is ours, have a look. So far, two groups of people have come and found it.

Also, look at the home page, I am sure you’ll be surprised how close the nearest geocache is to you!!!!

  1. Sounds like great fun. Used to love treassure hunts as a kid – and what a great way to get kids away from the screen – whicever version. P.S. That's really great news of the feral kitty – sounds like you and Mariasol are doing a great job.

  2. Oh well then I guess you DO geocache then, don't you? 🙂 🙂 🙂 I've been doing it with my kids since for about 8 or 9 years, but we only go like once or twice a year.Rather than trying to recapture my original enthusiasm, I'll just copy you what I answered you on my blog in case you don't go back & check – "Mark – I got all the pictures this week from inside Houston city limits. Except for the book, which I saw on the internet & just couldn't pass up.On geocaching – I love it but we rarely have time except during the heat of the summer. I wish we had found one for my little cousin, because I'm not sure I convinced him that traipsing around in the 99 degree weather and hot sun was an activity worth repeating.":-) 🙂 🙂

  3. I've never heard of it, but it looks to be a ton of fun!! You should make your a little more difficult. Sounds like it was too easy. How clever of some one to think up this nifty game!!…debbie
