My first plaster, or: debilitated

Yesterday, at work, I stepped down off a fairly high curb, landed on some scrap concrete, and twisted my ankle to the outside. It swelled up like two hard boiled eggs taped to my foot. one on the top of my foot and one on my ankle. I went to the hospital emergency room and had X-Rays taken. Then I found myself sitting in a room with drawers marked “plaster” and also there were crutches hanging every where. I have a half of a cast on my foot. And crutches. My first cast, not my first crutches. I’m missing the dive as I type this. The weather has been perfect, and the diving spectacular. I haven’t been diving in a looooong time.
I have to figure out how to take a shower.

  1. OH NO!! Sorry to see that you’re on crutches and have a cast Mark. That has to suck. Crutches are no fun – I learned that recently myself – and for you I’m sure it’s worse given your active lifestyle of diving, walking, cycling, etc. I hope it mends quickly and you can get back to normal soon. Good luck with that shower.

  2. There must be some technical way we can all sign that from online? Or will you just write on it for me – “Watch your step”. Sorry to hear that. Bummer.

  3. Now that just sucks! How long do you have to have the cast on? Is it a non-weight bearing cast? I broke my ankle and leg in 1993 and had a cast on for 3 LONG months. I showered by putting a garbage bag on my leg and taping it shut. We (your loyal readers) will just have to take turns coming out to help you. I’ll take first shift. Dude you need a shave, or nair. 😉

  4. 5 years ago I broke my wrist badly enough that it required surgery (pins and screws). I had a cast for 3 moths (not my first, I tend to get myself in jams that require casts and such). When they removed my cast my hand looked like a monkey paw (which was the name I gave myself until all the hair fell off a couple of weeks later). Anyway, you all think he needs a shave now, wait until they remove the cast and say “hello” to the gorilla calf. It’s gonna be lovely!!!ps. sorry about the cast, man. I know the feeling of wanting to dive and life gets in the way. Here’s to quick healing!

  5. sorry to hear about the cast….either you bag the leg or hold it outside the shower….either way pretty much sucks….good luck 🙂

  6. Ooh, MarkD, that sucks. Hope you’re feeling better.Sorry, but all I could think of looking at the picture was how nice and tan your legs are!
